Finito Pt. 2 and The Next Painting

I couldn’t leave well enough alone...because "well enough" just isn't good enough for me. So, I let the painting sit for a week and I retooled John's face, which was the only part about this painting that didn't please me. Now I think I can actually let it rest and put the varnish on top.

My next painting is one I sketched out on canvas about 13 years ago. Yup...13 years ago. I can either complain about how slow I am or be happy that I am finally getting to it (i'll choose the latter!). This will be one of the towers of the West Baden Springs Hotel.

After a marathon session that began early this morning, I can now say that I am finished on this painting. I am very pleased with how Lana turned out; I am liking John G. better than I did last night, but still can’t say that I really nailed it on his likeness. His face has gotten to a point that it is just about overworked, so the brush is down and this one has gone up on my virtual art gallery for sale. I am also including some closeups of the painting. What’s next? I will throw in what I hope will be a "quick" architectural painting before I do one of Audrey Hepburn.

Frustration

I spent all day (literally...all day) yesterday reworking and trying to finish this painting. I am really happy with all...except for John Garfield. He is just not coming together. Hopefully a night's sleep and a fresh perspective this morning will help me finish it.

I COULD say that I’m done, but I know the best thing to do is to let it sit for a few days and then go back for some final changes. I can already see some problems that need to be fixed, especially dealing with the background (which I'm not totally happy about yet) and Lana's art. Stay tuned.

Shades of Gray

The things I love about acrylics is that they dry quickly, meaning I can paint for long periods of time.

The thing I DON’T love about acrylics is that they dry quickly. When doing blending, I have to work fast before the paint dries and get all the shading done as fast as possible. Otherwise, I have to mix the colors and do my best to match what has already dried. It’s a pain, and pretty much a "get it right the first time" proposition. So, the work continues...

I’m starting to get more excited about this painting as it nears the finish; still, there’s a little bit of wonky-eye going on with John Garfield that I need to fix. Since the original photo source I am using is a little on the hazy side, details are slightly hard to see. Might take a little work to get it right.

Final Evil Queen & Lana

This one took a lot longer than I thought it would. Typically I use colored Prismacolor pencils to sketch my paintings out before I put paint on the canvas. Especially on this one, the red pencil I used bled through on the lighter colors. And bled. And bled. No matter how many layers of paint I put on (which is against my nature as I typically like a nice flat surface!), the red pencil showed through. About ready to give up, I decided to put a matte sealer over the offending areas; sure enough, it lessened the bleeding. You can still see some pink tint from the pencil, but at least the old gal doesn’t look like she has rosacea anymore!

Evil Queen Interlude

Obviously, it has been awhile since I have put the paint to the canvas, so over my 4 day weekend, I decided to take an hour or two and devote myself to a new painting, since I knew that my “Postman” painting would require more than a few hours. 1-six hour session and another 2-hour session later, my “Evil Queen” was finished. Once I start painting, I find it difficult to stop. There’s something about a beautiful villainess that I find inspiring; the lines, the expression, the colors...just had to put this one on canvas.

Paint-by-numbers fun, Pt. 2

I let this one sit for a few days and had to go at it again...and again...and again. I wanted to keep the vintage paint-by-numbers feel, but there were some colors, shapes, and other wacky things that bothered me, causing me to keep working at this painting over the last week. Now it is done, and I am ready to go back to Lana Turner...it is definitely time to finish that one! The first pic here is the final product, and the 2nd pic is how the painting came out following the directions exactly (well, almost exactly).

Paint-by-numbers fun

A friend of mine gave me a vintage paint-by-numbers kit as a gag gift. Well, partially a gag...and probably as a jump-start to get me painting again. Within a week, I’d pretty much finished it. The first picture shows the virgin canvas; the second one shows how the painting looked after following the instructions (well, 98% of the instructions...I attempted to soften the face a little).

Not content to just merely follow the numbers and paint within the lines, I decided to change some of the coloring as well as change the face of the subject from Thomas Lawrence’s “Pinkie” to Mel Odom’s “Gene Marshall.” I’ll probably revisit this painting in a few days with some more changes. Stay tuned!

Relaxing at The Riviera

In my “younger years,” Palm Springs held little fascination for me. However, as I get older, I sure do appreciate the forced relaxation that it thrusts upon its visitors. With the high temperatures and low amount of activities available, Palm Springs puts one into a state of lethargy which is very welcome after the stress of work and life’s other hurdles wear you down. On my most recent trip, I tried a different hotel, The Riviera Resort & Spa. I had admired the design in the past and decided to give it a whirl. Although I loved the decor and style, I feel no need to return. The service was friendly yet painfully slow (until checkout time, at which time housekeeping appeared in a twinkling!). For room service, each time a message had to be left; a return call took way too much time and too many follow-up phone calls. It lacked the intimacy of The Colony Palms, which is a result of the size of the property and the chic hipster vibe that it throws off. An enjoyable stay? Yes; would I recommend it? Well...it wouldn't hit the top of the list, and it wouldn’t fall to the bottom...let’s just say somewhere in between. It’s location is also a negative; just slightly too far to make it convenient to the shops and museums of downtown Palm Springs.

Solana Beach Train Station

Recently, I have been using the train more in the interest of sustainability as well as a more relaxing journey. Here are some shots of the Solana Beach Train Station. I love the simple yet very stylish design. I would call this Modern Vintage!

San Diego to Dallas to Philly, Pt. 2: The Cassatt Mansion

Imagine having a HUUUGE mansion as your playground when you were a kid. That’s exactly what I had...kind of. The local YMCA was located in the former Cassatt Mansion. The expansive property had a 34 room mansion built of Flemish bond brick in 1907 as its centerpiece. I remember running up and down the hallways, checking out the plethora of dusty rooms, and having daycamp inside this French Renaissance Style home (although at the time, French Renaissance meant very little to me!).

Via the wonderful worldwide web, I was able to glean a little history on my former playground.

The Cassatt Mansion was built by J. Gardner Cassatt, brother of famous impressionist painter Mary Cassatt (whose painting leads off this entry). The Cassatt family were part-owners of the Pennsylvania railroad. Their cousin, Mary Cassatt, was the famous French Impressionist style painter. Although she didn’t live in the mansion, Mary Cassatt did come to visit her brother in 1908 and most likely saw the house then. The architects were Cope and Stewardson of Philadelphia. In 1951, the Cassatt family decided that with the reduced use and the high cost of maintenance, it was time to sell the estate. At that time the estate occupied the same 124 acres originally purchased in 1906, but it was no longer a self-sufficient farm. A local broker subdivided the property in 1951. The Norbertine Order bought 54 acres, including the mansion; and the 70-some acres to the east of Foxall Lane were developed and new roads named Country and Abbey opened. Somehow the Norbertine Fathers learned that the Cassatt family was selling their estate. So the Wisconsin-based order bought the house and adjoining 54 acres, which is still what the YMCA has today.

The YMCA bought the property in 1964 as the site for a complete, multi-purpose community activity place, and also raised the money to upgrade the mansion and build their facilities. Father Neitzel, Head of the Norbertine Priory, whose order then owned the former Cassatt property, was most helpful in working toward a sales agreement which the YMCA could match. On December 31, 1964, the sale was completed for $210,000. Most of the amount was represented by pledges. A capital campaign accumulated enough funds to pay off the note to the Norbertines.

The "Y" renovated the mansion house, at an additional cost of $80,000. The carriage house was renovated in 1967, three years later. Tennis courts were added, followed by improvements necessary for swimming.

Behind the main desk in the spacious paneled entrance hall, there is a plaque dedicated to the memory of J. Gardner Cassatt by his daughters, Ellen Mary Cassatt Hare and Eugenia Cassatt Madeira. In 1964 the family donated money to the Capital Funds drive to restore the mansion, and in turn the YMCA has done a wonderful thing by preserving that estate and his legacy.

San Diego to Dallas to Philly, Pt. 1

Last Thursday I went to the San Diego airport at the crack of dawn, ready to fly home to Philly for my annual trip home to visit mom. Mother Nature had other ideas. A few early morning shots from the plane show the gorgeous sunrise over downtown San Diego and the perfectly picturesque cloud formations that I was able to capture through the window.

Flash forward a few hours later and you have these horrible shots of Dallas Forth Worth’s airport: talk about winter white! Fearing I might get stuck overnight in Dallas, it was a nailbiter as I sat on the plane for a few hours waiting for us to be cleared.

Once the plane got "de-iced" (which is a rather unsettling process!), I knew we’d be cleared for takeoff shortly. Feeling the wheels spin on the runway, I was saying my prayers!

Once I made it home, all was okay. The icicles and snow made for some beautiful photos, and the warm red of a male cardinal added some pizzazz!

The Postman Always Rings Twice, Pt. 4

This painting has dragged on for almost a year now. Partially because of my crazy schedule, and partially because I haven't really had a solid direction. I don't like to simply repaint what is already in a photograph; I like to add a little something extra to be able to put my own "creative" stamp on it. In doing the background, I became even more disinterested until I decided to go with a deco/Tamara Lempicka-style background. What A Difference A Year Makes: The Colony Palms Hotel

Over a year ago, I jogged by The Colony Palms Hotel in Palm Springs one early morning and it reminded me of the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood. Making a mental note, I figured I’d give it a shot on my next trip, which turned out to be over New Year’s Eve. I loved the look and the feel of the place, but the service was somewhat lacking. One year later, I gave it another shot and was very pleased to find that it had greatly improved. Not only that, but the food at its restaurant, The Purple Palm, was also much better.

For my staff’s annual retreat (which they deserve for working at substandard University pay!), we went to Palm Springs (which the University did not pay for, before anyone starts getting their feathers ruffled) and had our luncheon at the Purple Palms. The atmosphere, service, and food were impeccable. A great time was had by all. By the time the molten lava cake dessert came out, everyone was wishing they had booked rooms to take a nap!

The rooms are extremely comfortable, perfectly appointed, and I especially like the toiletry products that they carry now. A vast improvement over what they carried a year ago.

Journey Back to Savannah, Pt. 2

Each time I go back to Savannah, I have my list of faves that bare repeating: Mrs. Wilkes for lunch, the Pink House for dinner (oh that Fried Pork Chop), and of course the ice cream at Leopold’s. Each time I go I also pick up a few new faves as well; on this recent trip, for restaurants it was Alligator Soul, located near the Telfair Museum. Just take a look at those Fried Green Tomatoes!

The ambiance, service, and food are definitely worth returning for.

The Andrew Low house in Lafayette Square was also a new discovery; this one definitely calls for a repeat visit, as many of the furnishing were moved or removed for the filming of Robert Redford’s upcoming civil war movie.

Unfortunately, no interior shots were allowed; but trust me, it is worth a tour, as it has been painstakingly restored to its original grandeur.

Journey Back to Savannah

The plane had barely landed from my conference in Memphis and I was back at the airport heading to Savannah for my annual trek. I just love that city; however, if I ever visited during the summer months, I’m sure I’d be singing a different tune. This is the second time I stayed at the Hamilton-Turner Inn; what a fantastic place. I cannot recommend it highly enough; fantastic staff, delicious breakfasts (as good as any restaurant), rooms that are immaculate and perfectly appointed...and a killer location. Appropriately enough, this first batch of photos that I shot on my most recent visit to Savannah are from Lafayette Square, the area where the Hamilton-Turner Inn is located.

Memphis: Just a few more

On one of my early morning runs/photo shoots (great combo of activities!), I literally stumbled upon the site where Martin Luther King was killed over 40 years ago. With nobody around, it is somewhat chilling. Converted into a Civil Rights Museum, replicas of the two cars that were parked in front of the hotel make you feel as if you’d entered a time warp.

Later in the day, I returned to the site for a few more photos, hoping for better lighting. By this time, the museum was open and you could see Joe-Schmoe tourist walking around the rooms of the motel. Just didn’t seem right. I left shortly thereafter.

A very positive experience that I had in Memphis was being shown the Courthouse by an Officer on Duty. Even though it was closed, the recently restored building was opened up for me and my camera. How cool was that—a private guided tour! Thumbs up to Memphis hospitality!

If you’re looking for a great restaurant while in town, Daveland highly recommends the Majestic Grille, located in a former theater. You can still see remnants of the building’s past. Although it’s a shame to lose a vintage theater, adaptive re-use sure beats the wrecking ball!

More Memphis: The Peabody Hotel

Just walking by the building, you probably wouldn’t really think twice about the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, however, it was a fantastic hotel experience for me. Full of history, it was refreshing to see this jewel was still shining; the years had not tarnished its beauty or appointments. The staff was very helpful and friendly and full of Southern Charm.

The rooms were furnished to perfection and kept immaculate. Plenty of space to relax & get refreshed in-between my conference sessions. The hotel also had a number of ammenities: a gym, pool, shoeshine stand, restaurants, and a good selection of high-end clothing stores. Quality all the way.

The lobby was gorgeous; twice a day, it was the setting for the parade of the ducks, a Peabody tradition.

Each morning, the ducks came down the elevator from their rooftop home (Duckingham Palace) to cavort in the lobby’s fountain until their 5pm curfew. Judging from the crowds of guests who filled the lobby, the parade of the ducks could put any Madonna concert to shame!

Welcome to Memphis!

My apologies for the sporadic posting on this blog, but life gets in the way...and usually, that’s a good thing. When I’m not blogging, that means I’m out enjoying the sites and usually got my camera with me. Went to Memphis last week; 1400 photos later, I am back home. Here is a smattering of what I shot...sure had a great time. Not a single bad meal and plenty to marvel at. More to come…

Old Town in San Diego

Whenever friends used to visit me here in San Diego, one of the first places we'd have to go was the Casa Bandini in Old Town. Although the margaritas and the food may not have been the best, the open patio seating with festive mariachi bands and party atmosphere made it a fantastic "welcome to San Diego" spot. Alas, it is no more. Still, Old Town still exists as does the nearby Heritage Park, which is a hodge-podge of "rescued" Victorian-style buildings from different neighborhoods that were moved to this area to save them from the wrecking ball.

Philadelphia Freedom

Although I grew up on the outskirts of Philadelphia, I never really spent a whole lot of time IN the city...until I got old enough to drive myself. I remember as a little kid, as soon as we got near Philly, the powerlocks on the car went “thunk.” That was my impression of Philadelphia.

On a recent trip to Philly, I’d have to say that my opinion of the city really turned around. I stayed overnight in the heart of the historic area at the Best Western Independence Park Hotel. Perfect location (even if they didn’t have a parking garage at the hotel), well-priced, and well appointed. I did a very quick walking tour that evening (and the next morning) of the historic area, taking photos like a mad man. It is amazing to think how much of our country’s birth began right in this city.

Unlike my early not-so-favorable childhood memories of Philly, the city was clean, felt safe, and also looked much better than I remember. My last minute choice of restaurants for dinner turned out to be a winner: Bistro Romano. Yum.

Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga

On my recent trip to Napa, I decided to stay in Calistoga, just a few minutes away, based upon a trusted recommendation of a friend. Fortunately, I listed to that rec, as I really enjoyed the resort that I stayed at, Indian Springs.

The resort reminds me of something out of the FDR era as you pull up. Lots of little cottages, a huge swimming pool, outdoor games, and of course the spa.

The rooms were clean and well appointed; new snacks (complimentary) magically appeared every day, too.

LOVED the pool. Just floated around all day in this giganormous rectangle of water.

The spa was excellent. Relaxing, and definitely one of the best facials I'd had in a long time.

Flying Over Napa

Up until last month, the Napa Valley was one area of California I had yet to explore. I am so glad that I finally did. What a beautiful area; not quite as spoiled as Southern California, there is still much agriculture and respect for the land there. I truly enjoyed my visit. A highlight was taking my first hot air balloon ride over Napa early one morning. If you’re going to do it, definitely go with Napa Valley Balloons. They are tops.

Special thanks to pilot, Gabe. How many pilots are good enough to dip the balloon low enough to pick bay leaves off a tree and successfully get back up in the air? I believe this guy could land on a dime!

The Queen Mary

Once a luxury liner, this 1936 cruise ship now sits in Long Beach since 1968, acting as a hotel, restaurant, and semi-tourist trap. Although it still has some of the trappings of its former glorious self, it is definitely in need of a sugar daddy who can do a first-class restoration. Figuratively drifting along without a real mission, it would appear that the owners are doing the best that they can to make a buck. However, it is obvious that this “plan” is not really working too well. I sure hope this piece of floating history is able to be stablized and restored.

My Favorite Addiction: The Chateau Marmont

I love going to Disneyland on my birthday, but even more so, I love going to the Chateau Marmont. This place is my most guilty addiction. It is one of the most peaceful and calming places. You feel the spirit of its legendary past while being able to enjoy modern amenities and service that keeps me returning. It never fails that as soon as I check out I am scheming as to how I can justify my next stay.

It’s always cool to stay in a room that is virgin to me...photographing it for the first time and seeing what cool little treasures decorate the suite. This time it was Room 48.

No comment on the foofy key chain, though.

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel: Location, Location, Location

Last week I was able to attend a semi-sneak preview of Pixar’s latest genius creation, “Up” at the El Capitan in Hollywood. Those who know me know that without a nap, there is a 99.99% chance of me falling asleep during a movie. Add in the fact that the movie didn’t start until 11pm, and heck...I might as well just bring a pillow and blanket along!

Thanks to the Hollywood Roosevelt, crisis averted! Located about a block away from the El Cap, The Roosevelt is the perfect blend of history and hip. Many of the lobby and mezzanine areas hark back to the bygone days of Hollywood, while still maintaining a clean and contemporary feel.

Before my required pre-movie nap, I ate a DELICIOUS dinner at one of the hotel’s restaurants, 25 Degrees. The caprese salad with watermelon slices melted in my mouth...and the cheese used sure beat the typical rubbery slices of mozzarella that one finds when dining out. As the Roosevelt states on their website, the decor is "bordello meets burger bar.” Be sure to try the #2 burger...pesto, tomato, and premium beef...wow...I was in a happy food coma shortly thereafter!

I was recently in Palm Springs/Indian Wells for work. On the way out of town, I decided to try The Riviera Resort for breakfast before I headed back to San Diego. The look of this hotel has intrigued me; at night, it looks like something right out of Vegas.

The interior of this hotel was just as impressive (if not more) than the outside. Clean, sleek, trendy, vintage, modern...all in one!

Obviously, the intent of this hotel was to evoke the glamour of 1960’s Palm Springs, complete with mod portraits of the city’s Hollywood inhabitants, including Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, and Debbie Reynolds. Seeing the decor and design made me even more anxious to try the restaurant.

It was breakfast, so there wasn’t too much to really tax the chefs on the menu. However, for the prices being charged (which I would expect from this type of resort), for crying out loud, serve fresh-squeeze juice. I couldn’t believe it when my grapefruit juice came out and it tasted fresh...fresh out of the can. Little details like that really mean a lot. Still, looking around at the hipster-wannabes who were crowding around the pool, I had a feeling that the typical patron of this place may not know the difference. Would I want to stay here? Chances are slim. The type of crowd this hotel attracts are not my style; they may have money, but they definitely are short on taste and class. I prefer something a little more on the laid-back end.

Little Italy: The San Diego Branch

I go to Little Italy frequently, and not just because I am 50% Italian. My favorite camera store is located smack-dab in the middle of Little Italy: Nelson Photo Supplies. Customer service for camera freaks doesn’t get any better than this!

On a recent trip, I found one new reason to go there: Buon Appetito. Besides the fact that the food is out of this world (save room for the Strawberry Tiramisu), the service is extraordinary as well. Without going into great detail, because of problems with my party not getting there on time and the numbers changing, I had to switch tables 3 times...and they were extremely gracious each time. HIGHLY recommended!

The Postman Always Rings Twice

After a little hiatus, I am back to the canvas again. Thanks to the generosity of Lana Turner’s daughter, Cheryl Crane, I am painting a way cool shot of Lana & John Garfield from the classic MGM film noir, “The Postman Always Rings Twice.” The photo was published in her beautiful tribute to her mother, LANA: The Memories, the Myths, the Movies. The Isle of Capri

The Isle of Capri is one of those places that really resonated with me. It was so beautiful, unspoiled (for the most part), and relaxing, that I felt like I could stay there for years...if I could only afford to!

One of the best ways to see its breathtaking beauty is by ski-lift. Soaring over vineyards, your feet almost dangling in the grapes.

For those scared of heights, the views from the top is worth a little sweat:

One must-see at Capri is the Villa San Michele; one can only imagine what it would be like to live in a fantasy home like this. Spectacular views that never end, nestled in a hilltop retreat hidden by the growth of trees and greenery.

Another must-see is the Blue Grotto; the water inside glows an electric blue. Photos cannot capture it, although I tried.

On my recent trip back east, it was only natural that I'd visit the Brandywine River Museum since Andrew Wyeth had just passed away. Regardless of that, it is still one of my favorite museums, thanks to the collection and the setting. As you can tell from the photos, it was a gray day.

Nearby is the Brandywine Battlefield, where Marquis de Lafayette setup shop during the Revolutionary War.

Kathleen Turner: Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

In the early years of her movie career, Kathleen Turner was one of my favorite modern-day actresses. Her career choices were daring and her roles were fascinating. She was also one hot enchilada. This painting (done many moons ago) was based on a series of photos published in Vanity Fair to coincide with her turn on Broadway as Maggie the Cat. I ended up painting 3 of the photos in there. The First Time I Saw Vegas, 2002

There are some things you see that stick in your memory; the first time I saw Vegas is one of them. January 2002 was the first time I had visited the fabled city, and it would be hard to forget my first impression as my cab was wading through the traffic of the strip at night. I am glad my first sight of Vegas was at night, as I definitely would not have been as impressed if my plane had landed during the day.

I remember my brain being on sensory overload, not knowing where to look next...it was definitely an ADD fest for the eyes, bouncing from one neon sign to the next.

Wanting to get great tickets for the Cirque de Soleil show “O,” I decided to stay at The Bellagio.

Apparently, they were either light on bookings or thought that I was some kind of gambling mogul, because they set me up in a pimped out suite that was bigger than my apartment.

Although it is definitely luxurious, The Bellagio is definitely not my vibe as far as design goes; just like Vegas, it’s very over the top and slightly cold.

Still, my goal was accomplished as I did score excellent seats for “O,” which was absolutely incredible. I am not a huge Cirque de Soleil fan, but this show blew me away.

An American in Paris

As I was scanning some of my old negatives, I came across this shot of a painting I did back in 1999, showing Gene Kelly in his harlequin costume from the MGM Musical “An American in Paris.” The story of this movie was/is nothing new, but boy is it a feast for the eyes and ears. With the music of the Gershwins and the artistic genius that was Vincente Minnelli, one would be hard pressed not to enjoy this film...not to mention the talents of Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. One of my favorite sequences is the Beaux Arts Ball that precedes the title’s fantasy ballet. This painting shows Kelly just before his mind drifts off, with Paris in the background. The Chateau Marmont: The equivalent of crack

I don't do drugs. I occasionally will have a beverage (as in alcoholic), but usually, I will just order water (would rather splurge the calories on a good dessert instead). So, although I have no personal experience with crack (as in the drug), I can tell you that staying at the Chateau is my personal equivalent of doing crack. It’s probably been at least 1-2 years since I’ve stayed there (although I’ve stopped by for lunch a few times, which is probably like smoking weed but not inhaling), so my recent 3-day stay left me craving more. I was thinking, “How can I justify another stay here as soon as possible?”

There are so many things I love about this place. The decor is pure vintage; and even the pieces that aren’t vintage are designed to look as if they have aged perfectly with this 1920’s landmark. The Chateau is also extremely laid-back; no stress here. Want to eat in the “living room” area for breakfast...no problem. Just sit on any sofa and order something tasty (and I do mean tasty) from the menu. The bacon here...hot damn. Bacon is my weakness, and the Chateau’s is incredible. Thick-sliced peppered bacon.

And then there’s the pool. Sure, it’s not very big, but the area is completely walled in with tropical plants. You have no idea that you are right on Sunset, one of the busiest and most annoying thoroughfares in Los Angeles. And did I mention that on this visit, the pool was PERFECTLY heated...as in...no time to let your body adjust to the temperature...just walk right on down those steps and do your laps!

Call me psycho, but I have always been fascinated by this little blue bulb and the light that it gives off to this area at night. I finally photographed it. Yup...I’m weird like that.

And when it comes to little touches, like orchids in the room, The Chateau does it better than the others...no fake florals here.

This time, my new discovery was eating next door at the Bar Marmont. The food is excellent over there, and as long as you get there early, you shouldn’t have a problem getting a table. The beautiful people don’t start showing up until around 9 or so anyway.

One weekend...yup, one entire weekend is what it took to finish this one...as long as you don’t count the 2 weeks that I mentally painted it and figured out how I was going to accomplish it. The Colony Palms Hotel

I never really cared much for Palm Springs in the past, but as I have gotten older and appreciate R&R more, Palm Springs is definitely one of the best places to go for that. For New Year’s I tried the Colony Palms Hotel for the first time. I noticed it during my last stay at the Movie Colony Hotel when I was jogging by one morning. The spanish style courtyard and pool intrigued me so I gave it a shot. Somewhat reminiscent of my fave Chateau M in Hollywood, it just slightly misses the mark. Would I stay again? Sure. But am I anxious to return? Not necessarily.

The design is fantastic; the styling (similar to the Chateau) is simple, modern, and vintage all at the same time, with a little Moroccan/Spanish flair here and there.

The look of the Purple Palm Restaurant was pretty hip as well:

So where did it fail for me? Mainly in the area of service; on the plus side, the staff was very friendly. However, I got the feeling at both the front desk and the restaurant that everyone had been recently hired and was still trying to get the lay of the land. I'll definitely give it another shot, but not before I head back to the Chateau this month for my fix. That place is like crack. Time to pick up the brushes again, as World of Wonder has asked me to do a piece for their upcoming exhibit on RuPaul, who is about to launch the new reality show "Drag Race" (think Project Runway + Drag Queens). When I read that one of RuPaul’s favorite movies was “The Wizard of Oz,” this concept just seemed like a natural. Now that I have the piece "sketched" on my computer, it is time to put the paint on the canvas. This one will be 30" x 36." Stay tuned for the updates! Even though I live only a few hours away, Palm Springs has not been high on my travel radar. For some reason, its charms pretty much escape me, and whenever I get in the car for a trip, chances are it’s to LA, and not the Desert. However, on my most recent trip, I did manage to shoot a few things that I thought looked cool and might warrant a repeat trip!

Dipping into my library of vintage images, I came up with these two of the Chi Chi, taken in October 1964, approximately one year before this hip social club closed.

The Sunset Marquis

When my favorite hotel, The Chateau Marmont, is full, what’s a guy to do? Now I have the answer: The Sunset Marquis. My friends at the Chateau set me up here and I got the royal treatment. This little getaway retreat is only a block away from Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, but feels like the most restful place in the world. I’ll let the photos do the talking. One of my fave parts about it is that the staff gives excellent customer service; unlike the staff of the Hollywood Roosevelt, who treats you like they’re doing you a favor. That kind of snotty attitude doesn’t go very far with me.

And yes, they cater to rockstars!

Call me crazy, but at the last minute the muses called me and I decided to do another painting for tonight’s reception/gallery showing at World of Wonder. If you want to board the crazy train and see where the inspiration came from, then read on. Last Sunday night, I was celebrating finishing my Palin/Clinton painting and was able to actually eat dinner and watch a little TV. I popped in an episode of "Mad Men." One of the main characters also had a guest stint on "Sex and the City" as a politician who dated Carrie. My memory banks kicked into gear and I remembered Samantha discussing with the ladies about the country running better with a good looking man in the White House. Voilà. Something about this historic landmark in Los Angeles that intrigues me; I really do wish it was back in service again. Not so much because it provides a needed transportation service, but because of its rich history and the fact that it adds a nostalgic element of fun to a city that often gets caught up in “what’s new.” This first shot is from March 1963. DOLLYPOP! The Exhibit

Last Saturday, Sept. 12 was the spectacular opening night reception for the World of Wonder’s latest exhibit, “Dollypop!”. As you can imagine, the front display windows were busting out with cool Dolly decor:

Co-curators Marc Malkin (1st pic) & Steven Corfe (2nd pic standing with me in front of my "9 to 5" painting) deserve much credit for a fantastic collection of over 30 artists who used a wide-range of materials (from bubble gum to sand to paint) to celebrate the beloved Country Western Diva.

Guests sipped pink champagne (last time I had pink champagne was probably back in college) while perusing the collection.

Dolly didn’t make opening night, however, the next best thing was available and more than happy to pose with all the guests:

If you are in the Los Angeles area, be sure to check out the Dollypop! exhibit at World of Wonder on Hollywood Boulevard until October 8th! Meanwhile, just a hop skip and a jump away in downtown Los Angeles, the new musical "9 to 5" has just opened before its big splash on Broadway next spring. Somewhat skeptically, I purchased tickets for today’s matinee and LOVED it! Dolly did an incredible job with the songs/score, and the cast is top notch. Megan Hilty steals the show as Doralee Rhodes (played by Dolly in the original film). Marc Kudisch gives Dabney Coleman a run for the money as Franklin Hart, the sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot of a boss in the pink collar ghetto. Check it out!

Carmel: My new favorite city

Recently, I took a long weekend in Monterey/Carmel. Carmel is my new favorite city. This beautiful area “by the sea” is scenic, peaceful, relaxing, and has some of the coolest homes I have seen in years. Carmel is a city that has aged well and obviously been tended to lovingly by its residents.

Big hair, teeth, and...naturally, I thought to combine Disney & Dolly and ended up with the Red-Headed Wench from Pirates of the Caribbean. Keep your fingers crossed, folks...hopefully this will be a bulls-eye! The painting will be 24"x36" and today is day one of its creation with my sketch directly onto the canvas. Marilyn on Mailer

The pose of Marilyn Monroe that I worked from to create this painting many moons ago graced the cover of Normal Mailer’s infamous book. Although the text is extremely questionable, the selection of photos is incredible. The interesting thing about this particular photo is that depending upon which book you see it in, it can look entirely different. Some of the exposures make Marilyn look half dead, while others (like the one in the particular edition I owned) emphasize the over-accentuated glamour of her Hollywood persona. As I have grown older, I tend to prefer to paint Marilyn in a more "natural" state and not so plasticized. To see more of my art, visit my regular website.

San Diego Santa Fe Train Station

I have attended the annual HOW Graphic Design Conference for the last 8 years; one of the big draws is that it changes cities each year. This year, the city was Boston, which I’d only visited briefly back in 1981 when I had an interview at Boston College. What a fantastic city! I could have spent another week there. Dial M for Madonna: World of Wonder Opening

Although I used to exhibit on a VERY frequent basis when I lived in Indiana, ever since I moved to California 9 years ago, my output of art has slowed down to a trickle. Too many other distractions. So, it was awesome to be contacted by the World of Wonder Gallery in Hollywood about having a few of my pieces in their exhibit, "Dial M for Madonna,” from 5/23-6/23 (6650 Hollywood Blvd., corner of Hollywood Blvd. & Cherokee). This is the kind of thing I need more of to get my ass in gear and back to the canvas with the paints. Here are some photos from opening night:

The Hitchhiker Pt. 7: DONE!

A few days away was a good thing. I THINK I am happy with the result...it will take a few days for some perspective. However, it’s going up to Hollywood today for the exhibit, so as the famous line goes, "It is what it is." My thought on leaving all the trees, lights, and buildings out of the background was that I didn’t want anything to detract from Madge; thus the simple colors. The Bradbury Building

The Bradbury Building is a Los Angeles architectural landmark located at 304 South Broadway (3rd and Broadway). Commissioned by millionaire Lewis Bradbury and designed by architect George Wyman. It has been used for the films “Double Indemnity” (1944) & “Blade Runner” (1982).

Movie Palaces: The Balboa

I love the old movie palaces; the ones that were even more fantasy-oriented than the movies they used to show. Unfortunately, many have gone into disrepair or faced the wrecking ball. Fortunately, The Balboa in San Diego was recently restored, and unlike the North Park Theater, this one was a first-class job. Even the curtain will take you back to yesteryear:

A few years ago, I was on a Madonna kick and painted this shot of her from Vanity Fair, where she was doing a Marilyn inspired layout. Not a typical Madonna pose, which is why I liked it. Why paint what has already been captured over and over again? When I was recently asked to exhibit my Madonna work in a Hollywood Gallery, I decided to do a second one for the show, since the other one that they requested sold many years ago:

As before, I decided to do a lesser known pose of Madonna, choosing one from her book, “Sex.” I will use my favorite shade of blue, and I also want to do a little Tamara Lempicka styling to the background. To see more of my art, visit my regular website.

Angels Flight

Built in 1901, the Angels Flight Railway in Los Angeles had the designation of being the shortest railway in the world. It has been moved, closed, reopened, and closed again, and hopefully one day, it will carry passengers up and down in the Bunker Hill area of downtown Los Angeles. First photo is a vintaged July 1963 photo, followed by a few contemporary shots of Angels Flight in its present location a few blocks away.

Walt Disney Concert Hall

Just like my opinion of Billie Holiday, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles was not an entity that I immediately embraced. Seeing the drawings/model out of context from its environment, I really thought it was an ugly piece of modern crap. Seeing it in person, it really is an amazing architectural wonder and will make your jaw drop (in a good way). Like so many things, taking something out of context can lead to poor judgments and critiques. This visit to the Hall, I saw the Lillian Disney sculpture for the first time. What a beautiful setting. Kudos to Frank Gehry on this one.

GH Poster Painting 3

When I decided to do this reproduction of the original GH Poster, I figured I’d knock it out in a few days; no blending/shading needed, it would be a snap. I didn’t take into account the lack of opacity for the metallic gold or the preciseness required for the lettering...duh. Down to the wire here, I am at the touch-up stage, where I go over every inch of the painting to make sure all the blemishes are fixed up. To see more of my art, visit my regular website.
